Student Technical College of Caseros

It was founded on August 15, 1898 by students of the Mariano Moreno and Nacional Buenos Aires schools, hence its name, at the end of the 19th century in the City of Buenos Aires, locating its first ground on Blandengues Avenue (today Libertador Avenue) and Oro Street, in the neighborhood of Palermo. As a result, it was the first Argentine club named Estudiantes.[6] Almost the same as the new «crossovers».

Almost as long as the new «cracks» took in their apprenticeship, it took the club to change its original name. In 1899, everyone thought that the name «Colegio Nacional Sur» was too long to be chanted by the neighborhood’s supporters, who were growing day by day. Thus it was concluded that the word «students» not only accurately reflected the character of the institution, but it was both easy and sonorous to use it from the stands as a voice of encouragement. From then on, therefore, the Club Colegio Nacional Sur was simply called Club de los Estudiantes.[25] It is worth noting that the treatment given to the students by the club’s supporters was not always the same as that given to the students.

«It should be noted that the treatment we have received was really wonderful. The people of Estudiantes de Buenos Aires have been so kind and attentive to us that we will surely not be able to reciprocate in the way we would have wished. We have contracted an important debt of gratitude».

Almagro was affiliated to the Asociación Argentina de Football and started playing in the Second Division of that association in 1917. After merging with the Columbian club, they were promoted to the higher category and played in the First Division in 1919. Both teams played against each other in that tournament but could not play against each other because the competition did not conclude due to the migration of several clubs to the Amateur Football Association, among which Estudiantes was one of them.

This classic is one of the most evenly matched in Argentina, not only in terms of history but also in the number of official titles: Estudiantes (BA) is slightly ahead of Almagro in the number of titles, with 3 trophies to its credit: 2 Second Division titles (1937 and 1968) and 1 Third Division title (1971). While Estudiantes’ 8 championships are the Jockey Club 1910 Competition Cup, 2 Second Division titles (1906 and 1977) and 5 Third Division titles (1903, 1904, 1942, 1966 and 2000).

José Santos Romero, Abel Rolando Moralejo, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi and Fabián Nardozza were Almagro players and coached Almagro; while Juan Carlos Carotti, Fernando Ruiz and Felipe De la Riva wore the Estudiantes jersey and coached Almagro.

Although it is a classic at national level, given that between the two clubs they represent approximately 75% of the country’s population, this rivalry began as a neighborhood rivalry at the beginning of the 20th century, when the two clubs shared the neighborhood of La Boca. It has had numerous chapters that remained in the history of Argentine sports, both positive and negative.[5] This table is based on the following table.

This table takes into account all official matches recognized by AFA and Conmebol. When a match is defined by penalties, the result of the 90 minutes (or 120 minutes if there was extra time) of play is awarded, regardless of the final winner, and the goals scored in the shootout are not added to the goal table.

Huracán was born in the neighborhood of Nueva Pompeya and very soon after moved its headquarters and located its current stadium, the Tomás Adolfo Ducó, in Parque Patricios. San Lorenzo de Almagro was born in the neighborhood of Almagro, hence its name, and although today its stadium, the Nuevo Gasómetro, is located in Flores, its historical stadium, El Gasómetro, was located in the territory of the current neighborhood of Boedo, adjacent to Parque Patricios (although at the time of the inauguration of the stadium, the neighborhood of Boedo did not officially exist and was part of Almagro).

Its greatest achievements are the promotions of the 1937, 1999/00, and 2003/04 seasons, which allowed it to be promoted to the First Division, besides being runner-up in the First Division of 1931, the Competition Cup of the Amateurs Association in 1920 and 1924, and the Jockey Club Cup in 1931.

In 1912 the Adet brothers, A. and E. Cappelletti, A. and M. Rodríguez, E. Meseguer, J. Hipólito and others began to play some matches and, due to good results, it was decided to re-found the Almagro Football Club on March 1, 1913, at Adet’s home, Gascón 786, which used white and green jerseys with vertical stripes.

In 1918 the team came first in its group in the Intermediate Division and lost the final against Eureka by 2-1 at the Presidente Perón Stadium. It also played the 1918 First Division Competition Cup, reaching the second round.

After losing the final for promotion to First Division with Eureka, Ortiz de Zárate made a merger of the club with the Columbian team, which at that time was in the highest category and suffered an economic crisis. At first the Argentine Association denied the request because it implied the covert promotion of Almagro from Intermedia to Primera. But then it gave permission and the club debuted in the First Division in 1919 under the name of Sportivo Almagro. Something curious was in the 1919 Competition Cup where they had to play against Huracán in the first match, 2-2. It was 2 to 2. Then in the fourth tiebreaker Sportivo Almagro won 2 to 0 at GEBA Stadium (home Jorge Newbery). Then it was defeated in Eureka by 2 to 0 at Huracán’s stadium at that time for the quarterfinals.
